Lent day 11 reflection – 27 Feb 2021

by Donn D’souza

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus,

Today we look at the Bible, in the book of Deuteronomy chapter 26:16,17

Moses spoke to the people, saying: “This day the LORD, your God, commands you to observe these statutes and decrees. Be careful, then, to observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. Today you are making this agreement with the LORD: he is to be your God and you are to walk in his ways and observe his statutes, commandments and decrees, and to hearken to his voice.

What a comfort for us where God tells us directly that he expects us to follow his statutes, his laws with all our heart and with all our soul. There’s something so sincere about the mention of the heart and the soul. It signifies depth.

When we want to convey our complete love for people we do things for them from the depths of our heart.

When the Bible speaks about an agreement, the word it uses is covenant. A covenant is more than an agreement. It’s an exchange of people. It’s God giving himself as an assurance for us. Here, the terms of the agreement, is a sacrifice. And that sacrifice is Jesus on the Cross. This covenant is from the depth of God’s heart, given to us freely.

It is this sacrifice, this covenant, that is the heart and soul of God’s love. The Bible says , deep calls to deep, and so today God does not want us to be shallow. He does not want us to use words alone. No. He wants us to follow him heart, soul and actions. He gave us his heart and soul and divinity through Jesus on the Cross. In order for us to become like him he invites us to desire to surrender ourselves fully.

Four words from the heart is all that is required of us today – Jesus I Surrender fully!

Have a blessed and Jesus-filled day.
