Lent day 8 reflection – 24 Feb 2021

by Donn D’souza

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus,

Today we look at the reaction of the king of Nineveh to the preaching of Jonah. In the book of Jonah, it says,

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe,
covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes. – Jonah 3:6

For many years now we have heard the word preached to us. We have reacted in many ways. Sometimes we have judged the preacher who preached, sometimes we have judged others in our family friend and work circles, and sometimes we have repented.

It’s amazing to note what the king of Ninevah did. He rose from his throne , signifying his intention to repent and his eagerness to accept the word. That’s our first step today, to rise from our self built thrones. To rise from our complacency. To decide not to be the same.

The king of Nineveh then laid aside his robe, signifying a putting away of the old self and a desire to be renewed. This is something that God is calling us to do right away.

He then covered himself in sackcloth signifying an act of deep repentance. This is not an ordinary act, but one of depth and deep desire for God.

And then he sat in the ashes, signifying that he will wait on God till God asks him to rise from the ashes.

We need to remember that the King of Nineveh did it immediately. He did not delay.

So my question for us is this, one greater than Jonah is here. Jesus is here. What’s stopping us from repenting immediately. He’s waiting for us. With an open heart. Waiting for our surrender and to show us that he loves us. Let us begin by getting up from our thrones and going to the Cross.

Have a blessed and Jesus-filled day.
